The Verdery Counseling Center History
In 1972, Pastor Bill Lancaster asked E. Augustus Verdery to help with the overwhelming number of people seeking counseling at First Baptist Decatur. “Gus” Verdery wasa licensed professional pastoral counselor, and Director of the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Georgia Baptist Hospital in downtown Atlanta. Although Gus was working full time at Georgia Baptist, he began seeing a few clients on Wednesday nights and occasional Sunday morning. He began a Sunday Bible study group especially for clients suffering from addictions. Finally, the church decided to start an official counseling center, headed by Gus Verdery.
In 1981, Dr. Ron Stephenson became the director of the counseling center upon Gus’s recommendation. Ron remained at the counseling center until his retirement in December of 2007. Since then, several excellent therapists have served the Verdery Counseling Center. Currently the VCC therapist is Monique Wischusen, LMFT.
