CBF Senior Celebration
Young at Heart sponsors a mission in Memphis
July 18-22, 2016
Senior adults spent a week in Memphis helping out the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Baptist Collegiate Ministry. From refurbishing the kitchen with the guidance of Nancy Ward (nutritionist), to creating individual study centers, to painting and re-carpeting the dining area and large meeting room, the collegiate ministry is in much better shape as they begin the fall semester. The team also worked with the homeless shelter nearby.

Young at Heart
Young at Heart provides opportunities throughout the year for senior adults to experience friendship, adventure, service and the love of Christ. The focus of YAH is for adults 55 and older. You don't have to "join" Young at Heart. Just begin by getting involved in the service and activity opportunities Young at Heart makes available to senior adults here at First Baptist Church Decatur.
See ACTIVITIES and SENIORS SERVICE below for more specifics on 2015 opportunities.
Women on Mission
Women on Mission is an ongoing missions involvement and missions education program of First Baptist Church Decatur. It is designed to help women develop a missions lifestyle. As a part of Women on Mission, individuals have the opportunity to participate in missions ministries and missions education that enable them to experience serving Christ and serving others. The ultimate purpose of our Women on Mission organization is to take the gospel to everyone.
WOM meets the second Tuesday of each month at 10:15 a.m. in S218.
Senior Care Ministry Leadership Team
A ministry to the homebound, the Senior Care Ministry Leadership Team visits and shows concern for the sick and bereaved. A card ministry serves those who need encouragement. A food ministry provides Wednesday night Family Dinner meals for those who need physical assistance.
Activities — a sampling of annual events
We head to Helen, GA and to Jaemor Farms. Folks browse around Helen and select their own lunch location. After lunch the bus heads to the apple venue—Jaemor Farms, which is smaller, but much less crowded than Mercier Orchards. The cost per person is $10 which covers the motor coach.
Lunch and Learn
Three times a year our Senior Adult Ministry offers luncheons along with an educational program that targets the needs of older adults. These programs may deal with ministry functions of the church, topics like Scam Alerts targeting Seniors, or resources available through the ministries of Clairmont Oaks and Briarcliff Oaks. There is a small charge for the meal and all these luncheons take place in our Fellowship Hall. Watch for the publicity for the dates and topics.
All senior adult Birthday Party
Each year Young at Heart sponsors a birthday party for everyone. A special lunch and entertainment takes place after worship on a Sunday in the spring.
Clairmont Oaks Socials
Clairmont Oaks has an ongoing relationship with our Senior Adult ministry of the church. Social events are planned at Clairmont Oaks and hosted by our Young At Heart Committee.
The annual baseball outing is usually in August. It includes a stop at the Gwinnett Varsity for dinner on the way to the game to cheer on the Gwinnett Braves.
Veteran’s Day Banquet
On the Thursday prior to Veterans Day the Young At Heart Committee holds a banquet and presentation for our Veterans and their families. This is open to everyone. We have a program that honors our Veterans and educates our congregation about the service that Veterans in our church have provided. In November 2014, the Commander of the Atlanta World War II Roundtable was our featured speaker.
soldier Box project
Young at Heart leads the congregation in mailing soldier boxes to military personnel serving overseas. A FBCD greeting card, a Beanie Baby toy, a post office priority box and instructions are provided. Packages are mailed to arrive during the Christmas season.
Local and Regional Tours & Outings
Day trips, regional trips, and around town outings are held throughout the year. These have included trips to Chattanooga for three days, Columbus for three days, and Atlanta tours for an afternoon. Good food is always involved and times and costs vary depending on the tour.
“Big Trip” Opportunities
Every other year a “Big Trip” is planned for our Senior Adults. In 2015, a group took a Cruise on the Baltic Sea leaving from Copenhagen, Denmark and sailing to Stockholm, Estonia, Helsinki, and other Baltic ports.
In years past we have taken Cruises to Alaska and the New England area. We have followed the missionary journey’s of Paul in Greece and cruised the Greek Isles. We have traveled to Venice, Prague, Budapest and cruised down the Rhine River. Watch for the promotional material about our next big adventure.
There is no limit to the volunteer opportunities for active senior adults: singing in the choir, assisting in the church library, serving on church committees, helping with Vacation Bible School, serving at Wednesday night suppers, being a church greeter or participating in the many mission endeavors—to name a few.
Clairmont Oaks & Briarcliff Oaks
FBC Decatur has a close relationship with both Clairmont Oaks and Briarcliff Oaks, which provide affordable housing to seniors. For information about Clairmont Oaks Inc. go here.
