Weekly Letter from the Pastor — May 22

Dear FBCD Family:

May 21 was a momentous day in the life of our church, culminating a very busy and meaningful week of ministry at FBCD.

The church voted unanimously to call Kristen Koger as the new full-time Minister to Families with Children. As I said in the business session Sunday, I think this is a major step forward for our church in every way, not just in terms of ministry but also as a symbol of our renewed vitality, unity, and financial strength. Let us all covenant to pray for Kristen as she prepares to move to Decatur and begin work on June 18. Let us also all express gratitude to Dale Doud for his committed and selfless service to our congregation over these last four years. We will honor him corporately on his last Sunday with us, which will be June 25th.

The dedication of Grayson Morris in Sanctuary service Sunday was also deeply meaningful to all of us. We celebrate with Alan, Sally, and their extended family, and do indeed covenant to be the church family they need us to be as they seek to raise Grayson in the Christian faith.

Finally, what can we say about "Joy Night" other than thanks be to God. This was my first opportunity to host one of these music extravaganzas in this new era of our church. I join everyone who was there in being deeply grateful to God and to those who dreamed and organized this amazing event. I will reflect further on the significance of the event in my sermon on Sunday, but suffice it to say here that this powerful experience of Christian unity and worship across denominational and racial lines was one of the most beautiful things I have been a part of in more than thirty years of Christian ministry.

I am grateful to Shelley Woodruff for preaching and Matt Snyder for teaching in my absence, and I will look forward to seeing you all Wednesday night for the next installment of our series on Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Be the presence of Christ, everywhere you go, today!

In Christ,
