Weekly Letter from the Pastor — March 27, 2017

March 27, 2017

Dear FBCD Family:

This weekend marks six months of service for me as your Interim Pastor. I am grateful for every day of it. It has truly been a joy. In those six months, in full partnership with an excellent group of lay leaders, I believe we have accomplished the following good things together:
• considerably restored our unity and morale
• attracted many new visitors, several new members, and a few new believers
• reversed numerical declines in giving and attendance, stabilized our finances
• massively upgraded our education, care, and outreach through FBU, which has tripled our Wednesday night attendance
• broadened the options available in our Wednesday night food service
• strengthened our front office staff, management, and operation
• made our facilities use policies and scheduling more rational, fair, and free or error or confusion
• strengthened our 90-year-old partnership with the Boy Scouts
• clarified and strengthened the integration of First School and First Camp with the mission and people of FBCD
*hired an excellent minister to young adults partly funded through a grant obtained from McAfee School of Theology
• strengthened our social media communications under the leadership of young adult minister Matt Snyder
• just rebooted the Verdery Counseling Center under new director Monique Wischusen
• launched innovative new "Unearthed" service under the leadership of Kaitlin Curtice
• moved Kaitlin from interim to permanent staff role
• most importantly, made progress in being a faithful Christ-centered church, in discipleship, worship, Bible study, mutual care, and service.

This past week I announced that I will not be a candidate for the permanent senior pastor position. My letter is here if you missed it. In my remaining nine months of service, I hope and pray we can accomplish the following:

• hire a wonderful full time Minister to Families with Children
• complete major buildings & grounds projects, notably in the Activities Building
• continue to strengthen our programs for young families and young adults, leading to more young adults joining and committing deeply to our church
• continue to modernize our communications and branding
• meet our budget this year, pledge our budget for next year, and gain higher levels of participation in giving
• retain key lay leaders, fully use their gifts, and develop new leaders for the future
• find just the right person to be the next senior pastor.

Let us continue to put our shoulders to the plow, together, as we do the work of God's kingdom here at FBCD.

In Christ,
Pastor David
