Dear First Baptist Decatur Family:
We have received some important news that we wanted to share with the full congregation right away.
A message from Roger Paynter follows:
Dear Deacons and Personnel Committee members:
It is with a heavy heart that I must write and notify you of my immediate resignation as the Interim Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church Decatur. There are situations that have arisen in my family that need my attention to a degree that I would be prevented from giving the kind of pastoral attention that you need and deserve. Please know that I am very grateful for the opportunity you have provided for me to serve your church in this time of healing. It has been my great privilege to work alongside you. I will be watching and praying for you from from afar as you continue to seek to be the faithful people of God at 308 Clairemont and beyond. You are an extraordinary people and I know that God will continue to do strong work among and through you.

Roger’s decision was shared with the personnel committee and deacon leadership, the deacons last night, and FBCD ministers and church staff. Roger has emphasized that his decision is unrelated to First Baptist Church Decatur and that he has every confidence in the future of our church. Please keep Roger in your thoughts and prayers as he attends to personal issues.
Though it is difficult to have Roger step away at a time when healing is underway, we are moving forward, and ask for your active involvement in the work of FBCD. Plans are in place for preaching in coming weeks. David Gushee looks forward to preaching this Sunday, June 26, as we celebrate Parker Ebling-Artz’ ministry.
The personnel committee and deacon leadership are working together to confirm next steps in both the interim process and the search process for a permanent, full-time Lead Pastor.

In preparation for the brief Congregational Meetings at the close of each worship service on Sunday, February 7, please review the names of proposed church officers and committee members on whom we will vote.
Please note that these committees are “standing committees” for which the church asks congregational approval.

New version of the bylaws is posted here
The bylaws of First Baptist Church Decatur specify that the by-laws are to be reviewed at a minimum of every five years by a group of church members as appointed by the Lead Pastor and Deacon Chair. A group was appointed in 2015 to review and recommend revisions as needed. The members of this by-laws review group include Carol May, Bob Focht, Fred Cavalli, Rob Johnson, Devita Parnell, and Jim Wallace (Chair).

New version of the bylaws is ready for review
The bylaws of FBCD specify that the bylaws are to be reviewed at a minimum of every five years by a group of church members as appointed by the Lead Pastor and Deacon Chair. The last review was held in 2010 and published in 2011. Therefore, a group was appointed earlier this year to review and recommend revisions if needed. The members of the bylaws review group include Carol May, Bob Focht, Fred Cavalli, Rob Johnson, Devita Parnell, and Jim Wallace (Chair).

The date for a congregational vote will be announced soon.

Thanks to our FBC fellow members who have agreed to serve on the Deacon Council Nominating Committee this year.
(According to the current by-laws, this committee includes three members of the Deacon Council and three members who are not members of the Council.)

REVIEW AND VOTE ON BYLAWS
The 5-year review of the FBCD bylaws has been conducted and recommended amendments are shown on the copy of the bylaws posted on this web site. There is also a synopsis of the changes that appear with the bylaws that may be helpful if read before reviewing the complete bylaws. Discussion sessions will be held the next two Sundays, July 26 and August 2, to allow church members to ask questions and make comments on the amendments. These sessions will be held starting at 8:45 a.m. in the Sanctuary for those members that regularly attend the Sanctuary service and at 11:00 a.m. in Carreker Hall for those members who regularly attend Fresh Start services. The vote to accept the bylaws is tentatively scheduled at the close of both worship services on August 16.
